Lake Cumberland's history is defined by the 1952 completion of the Wolf Creek Dam, which flooded the Cumberland River valley for flood control and hydroelectric power, creating one of the nation's largest man-made lakes.
The project, overseen by the US Army Corps of Engineers, involved extensive construction starting in 1941 and resulted in the submergence of numerous homes, roads, farms, and communities. The reservoir was originally named Wolf Creek Reservoir but was officially changed to Lake Cumberland in 1954.

Here's a breakdown of the counties: Wayne County, Russell County, Pulaski County, Clinton County, McCreary County, Laurel County, and Whitley County.
Wayne County!
Wayne County, KY, was formed on December 13, 1800, from Pulaski and Cumberland counties, named after Revolutionary War hero General Anthony Wayne, and is home to Monticello, the county seat. Pulaski County, Kentucky, established in 1799 from Lincoln and Green Counties and named for the Polish patriot Count Casimir Pulaski, was a significant site during the American Civil War, most notably hosting the Battle of Mill Springs in 1862, which led to Confederate retreat from the area. The county's early history also involved the establishment of churches, schools, and the county seat, Somerset, in 1802. Over time, the county developed industries like clothing, furniture, and plumbing, and became a place of both development and a source of diaspora as families migrated to other parts of the country, especially after the Civil War.
